X-Message-Number: 26147 From: Subject: Cryonics Quackwatch -- another "warning label" Date: Mon, 9 May 2005 02:57:39 GMT Since posting my warning label about Jonathan Despres I have held my tongue. I believe that Jon is dangerously naive and has the potential to create a financial, legal and media disaster that could be nearly as harmful to cryonics as the Ted Williams affair. However, I am not a policeman. If others in the cryonics community are indifferent to the risk he represents, I cannot spend energy on him. And it is frankly hard to know what constructive action could be taken. I have received forwarding of mail from Rev Daniel Izzo of the "Cryonic Life Insurance Company" who wants to sell ice burial plots in Thule, Greenland as "natural cryonics". This guy is as crazy as they come -- probably the way cryonicists appears to many people. He has been around for years, discussed on SCI.CRYONICS, but I have seen no mention of him on CryoNet, so I thought it is time for another "Warning Label", slighly different from my earlier posting: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/dsp.cgi?msg=25953 With friends like these, who needs enemies? It makes the struggle for cryonics credibility seem like a hopeless oxymoron. The malfunctioning machinery makes the loudest noices. I realize that I may have appeared this way myself with such projects of mine as Permafrost Burial, but I do believe that chemical preservation, dehydration, isolation from air and permafrost temperatures have a possibility of preserving enough structure for future molecular technology to use for reconstruction. These are scientific thoughts. The stuff by Rev Daniel Izzo is pure wacko huckstering. Those who can stomach it might try looking at his "patent": http://p087.ezboard.com/fmellowbluestufffrm3.showMessage?topicID=7.topic and have a look at excerpts from a recent letter he wrote. -- Ben Best ******************************************************** LETTER FROM REV DANIEL IZZO Yes the Cryonic Life Insurance Company is interested in securing an ice glacier burial site for natural cryonics near the Thule US Airbase and THULE (QAANAAQ) Greenland community that is close by the airbase/airport NATURAL CRYONICS IS CHEAPER THAN TRADITIONAL BURIAL, It is estimated that transportation form New york City to Thule US Airbase, @$1,500 plus vault @$500 and local taxi service inland @$500 to the ice glacier burial location ( free burial plots ) plus @$1,000 for services and extra transportation costs, total natural cryonic preservation costs @$3,500, this is cheaper than traditional cemetary burials ad provides the American Family hope in a medical resurrection and stem cells revivals one day. The ice burial plots will be provided as a free gift for Americans and Service Members, who would like their families to be preserved in a frozen state. [snip] I am sure many US service members would rather be frozen and hope in a United States, medical resurrection as they are entitled I think, God Bless You from the Cryonic Life Insurance Company Rev Daniel Izzo Syracuse, NY ************************************************************* Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=26147
