Sorry to sound like a broken record.  Of course it's a topic that I'm
sure gets discussed by newbies like myself on a recurring cycle.  But,
in any case, by voluntary drowning, you could time your death to within
about 1 minute, which is much more accurate than if you were to wait for
hypothermia.  Who knows how long that would take.  And accurate timing
would be critical.  Also, if I took too many narcotics, I might not be
functional enough to do the job properly.  Actually, because the water
is so cold, you wouldn't actually have your lungs filled with water.
The first blast of cold water on your larynx would cause it to spasm
quite nicely.  After that, you might not be able to change your mind
even if you wanted to.  That's why it would be helpful to be dopey and
numb.
