This is the 193'rd update of my fly longevity experiments. Average
temperature was 25.8 C during this run. Estimated maximal longevity using
the formula (363 - T*11.2) is 74 days.
Humifulvate is a peat-based heavy metal chelator. I wouldn't expect
this to be beneficial unless the fly food was contaminated with heavy
metals. The null results indicate that 4-24 fly food is (probably)
clean.
Canadians are not allowed under current legislation to
purchase vitamin K1 or K2 supplements, without a prescription. This
completely unjustified legislation is currently under review, and now
appears likely that 80 mcg pills may be allowed soon. In any case, by a
fluke I recently did find *one* vitamin K1 supplement bottle in a local
store. After reviewing the medical literature I had developed a high
opinion of vitamin K and felt that a fly test was well warrented.
The phylloquinone (K1) pills I found were very dilute (80 mcg), and had a
much larger amount of stearic acid in each pill. Phylloquinone is itself
much less bioactive than menaquinone (K2) in many of its effects, so I
was skeptical about finding any positive effect. Nonetheless at the 41
day census the top two survivors were the bottles with the highest
concentrations of K1. This positive result, with such a poor product
makes me even more interested in trying menaquinone. If any American
would like to try donating a few K2 pills for a fly test, please contact
me off-list.
