Well, everyone, Cryonet has the usual proportion of good and ridiculous
messages.

Is politics in the US as bad as claimed? What and where is this rising
tide of violence? Suppression of civil liberties? etc etc. Who is telling
us about them? Well, Americans are telling about all the faults of
their country; if what they said were truly accurate, then we would not
have heard of those faults at all. Of all things, the Net itself suggests
that one thing that's really happening is that lots of newsmagazines
and political magazines are feeling competition from the Net. Shock,
horror, and the losses of freedom such competition implies.

Yes, Bush did not and still does not like use of embryonic stem cells.
At the same time, it's easy for Europeans to forget that the US does
not work like a parliamentary system at all. Bush isn't even a member
of Congress, nor are his Cabinet Members either. Ultimately it will be
Congress that passes any laws, and even if the President can exercise
his veto power, that veto power depends on a large number of Congressmen
who support him in what he wants to veto.

Moving away from the political nonsense, I will say that Marta Sandberg
has quoted some nice letters from the NEW SCIENTIST, and I'm glad to
see them here. Thanks, Marta.

Best wishes and long long life for all,

                   Thomas Donaldson
