X-Message-Number: 27180 From: "Jordan Sparks" <> Subject: Usage of term 'suspension' Date: Sat, 8 Oct 2005 13:25:57 -0700 I was politely informed that the term suspension is out of favor in cryonics, and that the term preservation is now preferred. I've tried, but I just still prefer suspension. Looking at the dictionary definition of suspension, there are a number of entries that have nothing to do with the physical properties of solids immersed in liquid. Many of the entries refer to issues of law, beliefs, or music. But one of the most relevant to me is "to cease operation temporarily". To suggest that 'suspension' is jargon that only cyronicists will understand just doesn't make sense to me. Everyone knows what suspension means, whether they have heard of cryonics or not. Suspended animation is a very popular term that everyone is familiar with. I will agree that cryonics has not achieved suspended animation yet, but the term 'cryonic suspension' is fairly accurate and meaningful. I don't think it's jargon. Who exactly decided that we can't use that term? Jordan Sparks www.oregoncryo.com Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=27180
