I tend to think of organisms as having two basic drives -- survival and
procreation. I believe that all actions, including those efforts to feel
good and to avoid feeling bad can be distilled down to expressions of
survival and procreation. I can't think of any other basic motivations
necessary for all organisims from single-celled creatures to humans. I
believe also that once we can hard wire such drives into machines and
provide these machines with senses and abilities to affect the
surrounding environment, we will have created artificial life.
