Maybe moderns have gotten too soft. Civilization started in mid-latitude
deserts with decent water supplies, well before the invention of air
conditioning. Hard to believe now, but a thousand years ago Baghdad ranked
as the most advanced city in the world, with universities, libraries,
rudimentary hospitals, public baths, a sewer system and a vast market for
goods going every which way.

Can Phoenix do any worse? A lot of people keep moving into the valley,
especially retirees with money who can live anywhere they want. In the early
'90's, when Mr. Pizer encouraged Alcor to move to Phoenix, someone published
a letter in Cryonics magazine opposed to the move by portraying Phoenix as
hellish place almost like Arrakis from Frank Herbert's Dune novels. Do Alcor
employees and members who live in and around Phoenix, 13 years after the
move, feel that way about metro Phoenix now?
