Subject: re: being too far out of the box

on cold filter, the poster named "financial
department" remarked that my pro-cryonics gospel posts
were "Too Far Out of the Box". (see
http://www.network54.com/Forum/291677/ )

My reply:
FD, IMO, you have the best reply on the thread, in
that you have dealt with a realistic hurdle--a sermon
preaching the godliness of cryonics might very well be
way too far ahead of almost all americans, i.e., too
far out of the box.

However, this hurdle is not insurmountable.

First, such a cryonics-friendly gospel would not be at
first completely and overtly a pro-cryonics gospel.
And it need not be. YOu all do not know what I am
talking about because you do not watch any of the
sunday morning preachers. I do. And I remind you again
that I am deeply atheistic.

The word of faith/prosperity gospel is not ALL that
far away from some of the ideas that cryonicists/life
extensionists espouse. This popular species of
christianity is often profoundly optimistic and
forward-looking. Magical thinking is involved in much
of it, yes. But there are frequent themes sounding in
the same sorts of heady and nothing-can-stop-me
optimism as found on cryonics-related forums.

Believe it or not, parts of the jehovahs witnesses
dogma are somewhat akin to parts of what a
pro-cryonics gospel would entail. I speak as someone
who spent many hours selling Jehovahs Witness
magazines door to door in my childhood.

Actually, a pro-cryonics sermon might not even mention
the word "cryonics." At least not at first. It's like
lovemaking. Ya can't just jump in there and "get
busy." Ya gotta warm 'em up first. This is a long term
thing. Memes have to be circulated. Cryonics has been
around for decades. And it grows gradually more
visible. Memes take time to disseminate.

This idea of mine is in some ways nothing more that a
supersizing of the cryonics meme dissemination
machine. Cryonicists have willingly restricted their
meme dissemination to a small-bore machine and a small
audience--the high IQ types accessible via the Net.

I say, GO PUBLIC. Forget the mass media, as it is
intrinsically conservative. Instead, reach into the
very heart of the american culture. Protestantism is
the engine that drives america. Git yer hands dirty.
Crawl outta yer ivory tower and figger out how to
turbocharge cryonics. Religion is the turbocharger,
and words are the foundation of religious sermons. And
us high-IQ types are good at words....ain't we?
