Coma patient wakes 19 years on
03/06/2007 18:24 - (SA)

Warsaw - Pole Jan Grzebski was adjusting to a whole new world on Sunday
after waking from 19 years in a coma, Dziennik newspaper reported.

The railway worker from Dzialdowo in northern Poland fell into a coma in the
summer of 1988 after an accident at work and woke up again in April despite
doctors saying that he would never recover, the newspaper reported.

Thanks to intensive rehabilitation work, Grzebski can walk and talk again.

It is taking Grzebski longer to become accustomed to the new Poland as he
can only remember life under Communism: he is as unfamiliar with cellphones
as reality television and the internet.

"When I wanted to buy him a new shirt, he was astonished that the shops were
open on Sundays," his wife Gertruda said.

Grzebski was more surprised at the amount of products on offer and the end
of food rationing. - sapa-dpa
