A very good book on near death experiences (and out of body experiences),
which gives a non-technical review of research in this area, came out
last year. There are several reasons this may be of interest:

:first, it is an excellent education for those who hesitate to sign
up for cryonic suspension, because they believe that near death experiences
"prove" that there is a spirit that survives death.

:second, it suggests that the dying brain produces images that may
allow more accurate estimates of when death will occur, given that
the person is trained to recognize them.

:third, it suggests the value of mental exercises and rituals that
may make the acceptance of death easier, potential reducing the stresses
on all concerned.

:finally, it reviews the literature on identity, which might contribute
to the more philosophical discussions on this topic.

The author is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the Univ. of the
West of England, with twenty years of research experience in the area.
