Better models of intelligence, society, etc. allow us to make choices  
about what we want to do or where we want to go.

Superficial and sensational claims distract people from serious  
ideas. They are typically psychologically useful in giving 'meaning'  
to people's existence, without forcing them to think about the real  
problems faced.
