This is estimated to be 30,000. The hype on launch was massive,  
however, so there were a lot of signups. Second Life is a Murdoch  
property and probably should be avoided for political reasons.

If we open up the scope of competition to include all online  
locations, then Facebook seems to be the front runner at the moment.  
This was a non-commercial application at Harvard that really took off.
