Subject: CRYONICS: Mischaracterization

Dave Consenza has mischaracterized the content of my reply to
his reposting of a portion of a confidential memo that I sent to the
Alcor Board in March 1993.
I never said that "...the risk Mike posed to Alcor would have
caused them legal troubles." Nor did I believe it. On the contrary, I
believed then, as I believe now, that if you take ALL the potential
risks of doing a suspension into account, Mike Darwin's participation
in a suspension, on balance, significantly lowers the risk of a poor
quality suspension and improves the chances of successful restoration
of the patient to life, health, and youthful vigor.
The fact is that, whenever a suspension is performed by whatever
organization, the risks associated with that suspension pose some degree
of risk to every patient that the organization is legally responsible
for. That's why CryoCare was set up as an organization that is legally
responsible for patients, but is NOT responsible for doing suspensions.
I never misrepresented my "real" opinion to the Alcor Board in
my confidential memo of March 1993. The board was well aware that I
thought that having Mike involved in Alcor suspensions would be, on
balance, beneficial for Alcor. I had made that clear in the past and I
stated it explicitly in the memo. As I said in my posting, the
measures I proposed were intended to address the concerns of certain
members of the Alcor board. I presumed that these members would be
interested in having these concerns addressed. The fact that a member
of the board (Carlos Mondragon) later posted my confidential memo to
CryoNet without asking my permission to do so suggests that I may have
been wrong about that. The fact that I have yet to hear a word of
apology from the Alcor Board regarding what Carlos did confirms it.
