Subject: Caution regarding Simon Cowell
Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2009 07:48:55 -0800

The Simon Cowell story still sounds questionable to me, given its hearsay nature
so far. Over a year ago the British press also "reported" that Paris Hilton had
cryonics arrangements, which Hilton later denied.

I would like to see an unambiguous statement, directly from Cowell, that he has
completed cryonics arrangements with a named organization, before I feel
comfortable claiming him as a cryonics role model.

I can imagine an alternative explanation to account for the story: I get the
impression that Cowell has an extroverted, attention-seeking personality. During
a lull in the Prime Minster's party, he blurted out the cryonics stuff to give
the people present something new to talk about and focus their attention back on
him, without meaning any of it. It also had the benefit of generating even more
publicity about him, which he apparently can't get enough of. Narcissistic
people tend to do things like that, after all.

"Around 2010 the world will be at a new orbit in history. . . Life expectancy
will be indefinite. Disease and disability will nonexist. Death will be rare and
accidental -- but not permanent. We will continuously jettison our obsolescence
and grow younger." F.M. Esfandiary, "Up-Wing Priorities" (1981).
