followed by a long list of plausible reasons to which I would like to add
two more critical ones IMHO:

a) Many people have a negative experience in life and think they will be
happier when it is finally over. This is not suprising considering the
levels of povety, disease, war and fear throughout the world. Even most of
those "lucky" enough to be born into advanced democracies find relative
educational, financial and social failure as their reward.

b) Religion offers a cheaper and better product ;)
