Subject: SCI. CRYONICS damage assessment

Richard Schroeppel (#3845) had some questions about cracking. Some brief
answers are:

Yes, we plan (as necessary) to repeat/verify all procedures that have been
used and the results in re cracking, as well as other possible deficits. I
believe we will get cooperation in this from Alcor and BioPreservation. One
hypothesis on cracking is that it occurs if cooling/warming is too fast in
certain critical temperature ranges. The possibility that cracking might
occur over time in liquid nitrogen seems implausible to me, but will be
investigated.

The cheerful aspect of all this--in addition to hopefully eliminating the
cracking problem--is that we will probably settle all objective questions
pertaining to damage by present techniques in a relatively short time,
perhaps as little as a year.
