Subject: Neuro yet or not?
Date: Sat, 11 Mar 1995 23:51:08 +0100 (GMT+0100)

Brian Wowk asked about why I hadn't converted my grand father to
neuro yet.

It all has to do with my rational behind the freezing of my
grand father.
Basically I want to be alive as long as possible,
and then be frozen under the most ideal circumstances.
I figure I have another 50 years or so to improve upon
the routines involved.
When my grand father died I suddenly had the opportunity to
freeze someone, and I jumped on that apportunity,
thinking that by getting involved I could find out what the
obstacles are, so that I could do my best to improve
the situation so that my mother later could be frozen
under even better conditions, and I myself eventually could
be frozen in the most reversable fashion.
Obstacles certainly exist: family oposition, distance, timing,
financing, government intervention, maintenance crew quality,
safety routines, you name it.
Since I am kind of sentimental about my body and want to be frozen
in full body myself, and since I look upon a full body suspension
as offering more means to do research on and more means to draw upon
for reanimation purposes, I have taken it as a challenge
to see if I can maintain my grand father in full body suspension.

On a technical level, we only know how to clone embryo cells so far,
Other cells though they carry the complete DNA, are still specialized,
some genes are turned off and other genes are turned on.
And I don't know anyone yet that can reverse the gen imprinting
and clone any adult cell. However some cells are less specialized
than other cells and it is likely that we might find a way
to grow complete bodies from one specialized cell group or another
long before we learn to do so from brain cells or head cells.
For example the precursor cells to sperm and egg cells,
(the spermatagonien cells) are quite unspecialized, the gen imprinting
has been set back close to zero and the cells are still diploid,
so maybe these are the adult cells we would be able to grow
whole new bodies from the first? On the other hand even these cells
have some imprinting: they are set to split in two sperm cells or two
egg cells, so we still have to do some manipulation for it to work
For the above reasons you might want to freeze other cells
than just the head, and rather than sampling every cell group,
it was easier to freeze the whole body..
There might be many other reasons for why we would need some specific
cell group or the whole body, thus I prefer to go for full body
suspension as long as possible.
In my grand father's case I still hope to get him into full
body suspension in LN2 again as soon as possible.
As soon as I can find a facility that permits full openness with the press
or as soon as I can build one in Nederland Colorado or elsewhere.
