The example seems strange to me.  If you assume that a politician's
votes are guided even some of the time by some set of principles, then
a vote for a politician is the same as supporting a vaguely-defined
set of initiatives.  Also, if everyone knows that people who resent
the existence of coercive politics don't vote, then a politician can
ignore letters asking for a reduction in coercive politics without
harming his reelection chances.

It's not like they're going to dismantle the government if no one
votes.

You can't take something apart without touching it.
