X-Message-Number: 4280 Date: 24 Apr 1995 06:38:49 U From: "Norton, Brook" <> Subject: Reason for not signing up Saul Kent recently posted several reasons why people interested in cryonics don't sign up, and how to answer each concern in an effort to persuade that person to sign up. I agree with Saul's remarks in general, but I'd like to add my reason for not signing up (yet). Its actually a variation of #2 on Saul's list: > 2. I'M YOUNG AND HEALTHY...I'LL SIGN UP LATER WHEN I NEED > CRYONICS MORE. Additionally, I can only marginally afford to sign up now. By signing up now, I would not be able to invest that money in an interest bearing account, and so would, to some degree, lower my odds of having enough money later in life when I will more likely need cryonics services. I judge (but a close call) that the odds of hurting my financial situation (by signing up now) so that I will not be able to afford a suspension later, are greater than the odds that for some reason my health will fail (disease or accident) and I will need to be suspended in the next 20 yrs or so (I'm 35 and healthy). However, the strongest reason I have for signing up at this time is to set an example for my family. Brother: not planning to sign up because doesn't believe required technology will be available for too long (and so will be thawed for 1 of many possible reasons). Sister: enthusiastically in favor of signing up herself. Mother: sympathetic but too far out. Father (MD): older and in marginal health; sympathetic, impressed by technical presentation, but skeptical that would ever be revived due to several socio-economic reasons. So if I sign up, putting my money where my mouth is, it would help to encourage other family members to do so as well. I'm already well informed of all the cryonics providers and am not looking for more reasons to sign up at this time... just thought I'd add my 2 cents.
