Subject: CRYONICS: FDA Jail Threat
Cryonicists don't really want to be frozen; they want to be alive and
healthy. ("Getting frozen is the second worst thing that can happen
to you.") One important approach toward maintaining your health is
to include nutritional supplements in your diet. That means vitamins,
Co-Enzyme-Q-10, anti-oxidants, amino acids, etc. Unfortunately, even
something as mainstream as the right to take nutritional supplements
is now under attack by the FDA. (The proposed bill HR2597 is one
example. Life Extension Report has mentioned many others.) This
hasn't been mentioned before on the cryonics mailing list (and that
may be partly my own fault), but it is important for cryonicists in
more than one way. If the FDA's efforts succeed, not only will we
find accessibility to many life-extending substances curtailed, but
due to the unfavorable precedent, we may also expect less publicly
accepted practices, such as cryonic suspension, to be on the list for
eradication as soon as they grow large enough to threaten powerful
interests (such as the AMA).
Saul Kent, President of the Life Extension Foundation, has been working
hard to stop these efforts of the FDA. I just saw more evidence that
his campaign against the FDA is effective; he got them mad at him.
I have appended below the text of a letter I received from The Life
Extension Foundation last night. Yes, this is all politics. And the
subject and wording are inflamatory. But you need to know about it
because it will affect you.
My main concern with posting this to the cryonics mailing list is that
it is likely to result in a long discussion that has little to do with
cryonics, even though the initial message (this one) ostensibly is
important for cryonicists to read. I would like to suggest that, if
after a week or so, our discussion has strayed far from the original
topic that we use other forums, such as the extropians mailing list or
libernet, for those threads that are appropriate for those lists.

The FDA Says It's Going to Jail the Foundation's
Leaders and Throw Away the Key
The FDA has told lawyers representing The Life Extension Foundation that
criminal charges will be filed against the leaders of The Foundation on
Oct. 1, 1991. It was stated that President Saul Kent and Vice-President
Bill Faloon of The Foundation would be dragged off the streets, thrown
into jail, and left there to await trial. The FDA said that every effort
would be made to deny Kent and Faloon bail, and that the ONLY way they could
avoid this brutal assault would be to agree to shut down The Foundation,
plead "guilty" to some "crime", and serve 36 months in prison.
The FDA is trying to defy the U.S. Constitution by imprisoning its most
outspoken political opponents without any possibility of bail. The FDA
thinks that by saying our activities are "illegal" we are automatically
"guilty" of whatever imaginary "crimes" they come up with. But this is
America, not a totalitarian state! The Constitution says that anyone
accused of a "crime" must be proven guilty in a court of law!
In the past decade, The Life Extension Foundation has disseminated
information about the latest scientific advances in order to help
people live longer, healthier lives. The Foundation was the first
to tell Americans about the enormous health benefits of Co-Enzyme-Q-10.
We were the first to tell about the ability of Isoprinosine to improve
immune function and lower the risk of AIDS. And we were among the
first to reveal that nutrients such as Beta-Carotene, Vitamin E, and
Selenium can lower the risk of cancer.
The Foundation has stacks of evidence about the benefits it has provided
to the public. We challenge the FDA to provide even one shred of
evidence that The Foundation has harmed the public in any way!
What we HAVE done is to reveal how the FDA has been biased against
vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients for the past 30 years; how
the FDA has caused millions of Americans to suffer and die prematurely
because of unjustified delays in the approval of life-saving medicines;
and how the FDA has illegally attempted to destroy companies and individuals
it doesn't like.
Now the FDA is attempting to destroy The Life Extension Foundation. The
FDA knows it cannot withstand The Foundation's revelations very much
longer! The FDA knows it cannot prove in a court of law that nutrients
like Co-Enzyme-Q-10, L-Carnitine, and Lecithin are "illegal" drugs!
The FDA knows that it's ONLY hope is to throw the Foundation's leaders
into jail and keep them there as long as possible!
DON`T LET THE FDA THROW SAUL KENT AND BILL FALOON INTO JAIL!
