X-Message-Number: 4947 Date: Fri, 06 Oct 95 18:11:30 From: Steve Bridge <> Subject: Alcor in the media To CryoNet >From Steve Bridge, Alcor October 6, 1995 Alcor Public Relations Alcor has been gaining publicity in several publications and television shows recently. Here are several to watch for: *Omni* magazine. Fall Quarter, 1995. Alcor has a full-page color ad (the last of our free ads as part of the "Immortality Contest" in 1993) on the inside back cover. We are already getting many calls for information. *Mondo 2000*, issue #14. A hip "modern culture" magazine; some good writing but graphics from beyond-*Wired*-Hell. This issue includes a solid 5-page interview with me, and some speculation on cryonics in general. It also includes cryonics humor, a few paragraphs of interview with Saul Kent, and a mention of CryoNet (!) and the various web sites. The bad news is that the speculation article is cynical and not well-thought out ("Will the Faustian price we pay for immortality be the commodification of the body and the loss of sanctity of human life on the planet?"). This negativity is paired with a brief history of "The Chatsworth Scandal" from Charles Platt's *A Short History of Cryonics.* On the good side, the Chatsworth sidebar is so badly printed (dark blue ink on a black background) that hardly anyone will have the patience to read it. *Spin* magazine, November issue. Another "modern culture" magazine, with a large emphasis on music. The November *Spin* is a special issue on the future, including a detailed report of Alcor's June suspension by a reporter who happened to be visiting here at the time. Excerpts read to me over the phone by the fact-checker make me suspect this will be a major article. On sale in a few days. *Men's Health*. November issue. "Immortality Made Easy." This article looks at "how to be immortal" from different perspectives, from setting a world record, writing a book, or otherwise becoming famous to donating your sperm or having yourself frozen. *Encounters* -- television show. Fox TV, 8:00 p.m. on Sundays. Sometime in November -- watch your local listings. This show usually looks at ghosts, UFO's, ESP, and other "weird stuff;" so we wouldn't do an interview for it until the producers decided to do a show strictly dealing with the future. We know there will be segments on cold-temperature brain surgery (also filmed here in Arizona ) and nanotechnology. Our segment was directed by a woman recently nominated for an Emmy Award for a fine documentary so we hope for something good. *UltraScience* (previously announced) -- a new TV series about the leading edges of science and the future. The Learning Channel. Segment "Impossible Dreams" (with Alcor) airs Wednesday, November 29th at 8:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 3rd at 5:30 p.m. (times may vary locally). The rest of the series looks interesting, too, with segments on "Super Humans," aging reversal, micro -and nanotechnology. etc. Steve Bridge Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=4947
