X-Message-Number: 5136 Date: 08 Nov 95 10:25:03 EST From: "Kent, Saul" <> Subject: Spending Research Money And The FDA Don Ashley asks for "specific direction" about how to spend "500 mil."..."to get us another 100 years of lifespan". This is much too big a subject for me to get into in depth on Cryonet, but I can lead you to some clues about my thinking on the subject. In the mid 1980s, The Life Extension Foundation, of which I am President, started a research program called PROJECT 2000 aimed at making at least one major breakthough in anti-aging research by the year 2000. By early 1987, we had put aside $500,000 and had actually donated about $350,000 to anti-aging scientists. PROJECT 2000 was then put out of business by an FDA raid on our facility, which led to a protracted war between the FDA and The Foundation. There are several reports in ANTI-AGING NEWS (our newsletter at the time), which go into detail about how that money was spent. A few years ago, I helped create 21st CENTURY MEDICINE, with Mike Darwin and Dr. Steve Harris as principals, in order to conduct life extension research. We've been funding hypothermia and brain cryopreservation research through 21st. In the Sep. 1995 issue of LIFE EXTENSION Magazine I wrote an article entitled "Can We Achieve Physical Immortality" in which I gave a general picture of my plan to help keep us around for awhile. I am now in the process of launching PROJECT 2020 to achieve major breakthroughs in human lifespan extension by the year 2025. I will be writing my initial article on PROJECT 2020 (which will be funded through 21st) within the next month. It will be the cover story for the March 1996 issue of LIFE EXTENSION Magazine, which will be available in late January 1996. If you're interested in any of these publications, please call The Life Extension Foundation at: 1-800-841-5433. Martin Olah asks "what the FDA is doing to kill me". The FDA is approving some drugs that can kill you. More importantly, it is trying to deny you access to nutrients, drugs, and information that can help keep you alive. Even more importantly, it is discouraging research that could lead to therapies to enable you to live forever. Finally, the FDA is interfering with people such myself whose lives are dedicated to achieving physical immortality. ---Saul Kent Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=5136
