Mike is of course correct: the pulse-sensing alarm system I outlined would
entail significant R&D costs, whereas the motion-detection system he
suggests would be much cheaper to create: the quick-and-dirty approach. 

At this point I have reached the limit of my knowledge about hardware. I 
believe (but may be wrong) there are now programmable chips that could be 
used as a shortcut for the kind of thing I have in mind; but someone such 
as Keith Lofstrom (do you still read CryoNet, Keith? Are you there?) 
would be the right person to address this question.
