Subject: Re: CD-R as storage

I'm curious why recordable CDs are not considered a reasonable storage medium
for archiving data? From what I've read about longevity, they are vastly
superior to any form of digital tape. There is some information on archival
properties of CD-R technology available in articles at The CD Information
Center http://www.cd-info.com.

I'm also curious if anyone knows how well CD-R media would survive the cool
down and rewarming to LN2 temperature. Presumably, if neither the cooldown nor
rewarming processes result in unrecoverable damage, indefinite storage at LN2
temperature would be just as viable as for human patients.

If no one has tested this, perhaps we should run our own experiment. I have a
Yamaha CDR100 and will volunteer to help with testing.
