X-Message-Number: 6143 Date: Mon, 6 May 1996 04:45:22 -0400 (EDT) From: Charles Platt <> Subject: Timothy Leary and BioPreservation On Friday, May 3rd, BioPreservation, which serves CryoCare as an independent contractor performing cryopreservation procedures, notified CryoCare of concerns regarding a standby kit including portable ice bath, oxygen cylinders, and ancillary equipment that had been placed at Timothy Leary's house. Later that day, Charles Platt of CryoCare, Mike Darwin of BioPreservation, and two others went to the Leary residence and asked to repossess the equipment. This was accomplished on an entirely cordial basis, with no expression of concern or regret by Timothy Leary or the various other people residing at the house. In front of an audience of about 15 residents and guests, Mike Darwin explained to Dr. Leary that he could no longer offer standby capability under circumstances existing at the house, and Dr. Leary said he deeply appreciated Mike's sincerity and dedication. He referred to cryonics personnel as "heroes." CryoCare subsequently notified BioPreservation that if BioPreservation wished to withdraw from this case, it could do so. This decision was not taken lightly and, indeed, was the culmination of logistical difficulties, legal risks, and many frustrations experienced during the previous nine months. As of May 5th, BioPreservation was no longer on call as a service provider in this case. At the same time, CryoCare still has its contractual agreement with Timothy Leary. Some of his public statements have made us wonder about his commitment to cryonics, but he has not chosen to cancel his cryopreservation arrangements. Therefore, CryoCare must offer other cryopreservation services to Dr. Leary as a substitute for the services normally performed by BioPreservation. At no time has Timothy Leary been left without some form of cryonics coverage. I realize that a dry, formal statement like this tends to raise more questions than it answers, but I can't go into more detail at this time. Timothy Leary has chosen to publicize many details of his personal life, but that doesn't give me an equal right to do so. In due course we will offer a detailed discussion of all the various events and issues involved. In the meantime our members can rest assured that for them, BioPreservation remains on call FOR EVERYONE WHO WANTS ITS SERVICES. If any of our members wants more information, feel free to call us at 1-800-TOP-CARE. This currently connects directly to my phone, and our system can automatically page me or can forward the call to our president, Brian Wowk, if necessary. I have seen for myself that BioPreservation offers an unequalled level of dedication, expertise, and medical technology and also takes exceptional time and trouble to advise and assist in patient care PRIOR to cryopreservation. This is unique in cryonics and has certainly been true in the case of Timothy Leary--as he is the first to acknowledge. --Charles Platt Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=6143
