I hope Charles is not implying here that the body of Henrietta Popper is 
being cooled slowly to -196 C. Experiments have found that in the absence 
of cryoprotectants slow cooling completely destroys the viability of 
cells. A procedure of slow cooling to about -10 C to dehydrate cells so 
that intracellular freezing does not occur, followed by rapid cooling is 
required for cells to survive.
