I have posted a similar query on the BSE mailing list three times, but people there seemed only to be willing to spend time writing articles about killing cows and finding someone to blame. Of course there are a whole range of prion diseases, and it is refreshing to know that there are possible avenues of scientific enquiry. Maybe the 2 billion pounds to be spent on slaughtering animals who may or may not be spreading the disease would be better spent on persuing this science. It has been pointed out that if BSE has passed from cows to humans the damage has already been done and the slaughter program will not prevent an epidemic larger than the Black Death, as its seeds have already been sown. It has also been said that the actions being taken by governments using taxpayers' money are purely politically based, and have very little to do with science. Does anyone who has provided answers so far have any objection to this whole thread being posted back to the BSE mailing list? >From the introduction to BSE list: >>>>>>>>>> To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to This is called "sending mail to the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed.
