X-Message-Number: 6313 Date: Tue, 04 Jun 1996 11:40:56 -0700 From: David Brandt-Erichsen <> Subject: Ninth Circuit case update Four Washington State doctors, who filed the original doctor-assisted suicide suit in Washington, have filed counter-arguments with the U.S. Supreme Court in response to the temporary stay of the Ninth Circuit court ruling which had legalized physician-assisted suicide. The stay was granted until July 4 by Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The counter-argument states that a more permanent stay of the ruling "would irreparably harm mentally competent, terminally ill adults." Justice O'Connor, who oversees the 9th Circuit, is expected to act shortly on whether the 9th Circuit can lift the temporary stay or leave it in place until the full Supreme Court decides whether it will hear the case (a process which would take about six months). <David Brandt-Erichsen> Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=6313
