Subject: The Prometheus Project - FYI

For the information of CryoNet and sci.cryonics readers, the following has
been posted to newsgroups:

balt.general, bionet.molbio.ageing, bit.listserv.xtropy-l, dc.general,
sci.bio.technology, sci.life-extension, sci.med

Since this newsgroup has been inadvertently informed of the existence of
the Prometheus Project, this post is a short explanation of it and an
invitation to find out more. Because most readers of this newsgroup may not
think that the purpose of the Project is directly related to this newsgroup,
I do not intend to disturb you with any more information posted here.

I thank you for your indulgence and I regret if any of you have been bothered
by the intrusion.

Paul Wakfer
Founder and Manager of The Prometheus Project

What is the Prometheus Project?

The Prometheus Project is a project to raise $1M per year for 10 years
for the purpose of doing the scientific research necessary to convincingly
demonstrate and publish in peer reviewed journals, fully reversible brain
cryopreservation and, once the money is raised, to do that research. The full
reversibility criterion is to include the recovery of as much memory and
other mental capacities as would be expected from a currently elective,
similarly traumatic, medical operation.

The project was begun on June 14, 1996 on a private mail list of 22
people. When (much to everyone's surprise) it managed to obtain pledges of
$100K per year for 10 years after about 2 weeks there (among *very* dedicated
cryonicists), on July 4, 1996, it was taken to the CryoNet list and the
newsgroup sci.cryonics. The pledge total is now up to $209K/yr for 10 years
or $2.09M total.

At this point in time the Prometheus Project is essentially a pledge
campaign asking a strictly hypothetical question:

1) *If* $1M/yr in pledges for 10 years is collected, and
2) *if* satisfactory scientific and business plans are developed, and
3) *if* the scientists and their plans are satisfactory to you, and
4) *if* a corporation is formed to employ these scientists to execute these
plans which issues a prospectus and share offering for that purpose,
4) *then* how much would you be willing to contribute, beginning in 1998, to
share purchases of equal amounts for up to 10 years, in that corporation.

No money is being requested and no investments are being solicited. If this
campaign is not successful no corporation to execute the project will ever be
formed.

The reason why I believe that the Prometheus Project pledge campaign
will be successful is that people are *not* being asked, "how much are you
willing to invest in a high-risk, biotech R&D startup", even though any
corporation which executes the Prometheus Project plan will be all of that.
No, people are being asked, "how much of your present life are you willing to
commit towards a very good chance at an enormously lengthened future life",
and *that* is a vastly different question.
