Religion 334, "Death and Dying," and Statistics 382, "Introduction to Statistics," are both being offered as courses on the World Wide Web, beginning Sept. 16 and continuing through Dec. 6. The study of death and dying is certainly practical. We must inevitably face our own mortality as well as that of our friends and loved ones. This course is, in part, designed to help the student think hard about these issues, and develop effective coping strategies based on careful reflection as well as careful analysis. This course is not designed to be a "self help" course, but a rigorous, yet interesting, academic study of one of the central dimensions of modern life, dealing with the perplexing topics of dying and death. CMU's College of Extended Learning has always been at the forefront in offering quality off-campus degree programs. For 25 years, CMU has expanded that quality throughout the state of Michigan, the United States, Canada and Mexico. Now, CMU has taken that quality into cyberspace through its Center for Distance Learning with courses on the World Wide Web. These courses extend the traditional quality established in CMU's course content to include the finest achievements in cutting edge educational delivery via the information superhighway. Each students will receive a syllabus, lectures and other material for the course via the World Wide Web. CMU's "Virtual Learning Center" will feature multiple levels of communication for students enrolled in the course. Interactive chat sessions will be scheduled between the students and the instructor in each course.
