Bob Ettinger writes about what motivates us. He specifically identifies
"the desire to feel good or feel better".

One of the more important subsets of motivation deserves some
amplification. When responding "very well thank you" to the question "how
are you"..., may people really mean " the pain is less today'( as compared
to "the pleasure is better").  Of course a reduction of todays pain ( no
matter how good that is), may come at a price of tomorrows increased agony
or reduced pleasure. The best strategies here are quite elusive..especially
when we need to factor in uncertain actuarial estimates of remaining
available feel good or feel bad time.
