X-Message-Number: 7520 Date: Fri, 17 Jan 1997 07:38:30 +0100 (MET) From: Trygve Bauge <> Subject: Cryonics and world population. In the short term cryonics doesn't increase the number of people running around, but only the number of people in storage. In the long run, reanimation wouldn't necessarily increase world population either. (e.g. the number of people both alive and active). If increased longevity is accompanied by slower ageing and a longer average gap between the generations, there wouldn't be a population increase. E.g. 5 generations 20 years apart or 5 generations 40 years apart, is an example of doubled lifelength without any increase in population. The task is thus one of slowing ageing so that women voluntarily and on average would wait longer before getting children. For every couple to get on average less than 2 children is another way of compensating for longer life without increasing the total population. Eitherway, it is fully possible to get a longer average life expectancy without getting any population increase. Furthermore the problem is not really population growth, but population density. Population growth is not a problem when it doesn't imply increased density. The continental shelves, the ground below us, the immediate outer space, are example of frontiers, were we already today with existing technology can more than double our developed volume. And even increased population density isn't necessarily a problem. If we build new compact highrise, partially subterranean cities, where living quarters, work, shopping and entertainment all are within walking distance of one another, it has been calculated that the whole world population would easily fit in on an area the size of Texas, with wilderness to spare! Thus don't let the less reflected who just search for objections to longevity, or who use every obstacle as a reason to object, don't let such people get away with threatening our longrun survival. Just calmly let them know that rational egoistic use of laissez faire capitalism is the best way to both pursue longevity, and to overcome all the obstacles along the way. * Life Extension systems, Norw.Icebathing Club & Action 88/Residental Assoc. * at Hovseterv.88.
