This story reminds me of some research, I heard about a few years 
ago, which attempted to analyze and produce synthetically the 
adhesive, which allows barnacles to stick to almost anything 
under water.  The group expected a wide range of practical 
applications for such a substance including bone repair.

I have never heard any follow-up on that story.
