Subject: First Prometheus Pledger from the Orient

In my last message I reported a new Prometheus pledge from Adrian Chia.

At that time, I had not yet received a reply to my message of thanks and inquiry
to this person. I have now received the following note:

>I'm a 18 yr old Naval Officer trainee from Singapore. I believe in
>giving everyone a second chance, not to mention the prospect of
>everlasting life. Everyone should be allowed the option of enjoying the
>wealth of experiences that comes with the long/eternal life that the
>project could aid in bringing about. I for one am not about to lose
>this chance if it falls in my lifetime and will do my part to aid its
>success. I did not know of the pilot project mentioned.

>Yours sincerely,
>Adrian Chia(1978-?)

I must confess that I got quite emotional when I heard that an 18 year old naval
officer trainee from Singapore believed that the Prometheus Project is so
important that he is prepared to contribute $1000 per year towards it. This is
not the first total stranger to cryonics to find the Prometheus Project and to
be attracted to such an extent by its revolutionary and humanitarian goal. I am
truly delighted to see people from all over the world, of all ages, and all
walks of life strongly supporting this goal.

Another new pledge has been received from someone newly attracted to cryonics
and the Prometheus Project. John Pietrzak wrote:

>I've just recently taken an interest in the field of cryonics, and
>learned about the Prometheus Project from it's website. This seems
>to me to be a very exciting research project, and I'd like to voice
>my support. I have a few questions, if you don't mind:
>
>1) The web site has a date of "May 14, 1997" as the latest update.
>Has anything significant changed since then?
>
>2) Is there still time to contribute a pledge? I would like to add
>my support if possible, and I can afford the $1000 per year level.

In addition, Max More announced at Extro-3 that he was pledging $1000 per year
to the Prometheus Project. I wish to thank Max for his pledge and for opening a
time slot for my Prometheus Project presentation at the Extropian conference. I
expect that this will lead to additional pledges and contributions arriving
later.

New Prometheus Project Total

Counting the $100,000 pilot project funding from the research institute

as equivalent to $12,000 per year, the latest ten year pledges to the Prometheus
Project bring the pledge total to $401,600 per year.

Pilot Project (PpP) Funding

The PpP funding total is still $121,000. I am quite delighted with this
response even before I am able to provide details of the science plan and its
budget. Planing and costing of the PpP is now proceeding with an expectation
that additional funding will amount to $100,000. As soon as this planning is
complete, I will be posting it here. PpP funding pledges should be a minumum of

$1000 and will be collectible upon completion and acceptance of the science plan
and budget by the pledger, the approval of this plan by the research institute

contributing the $100,000, and the creation of an appropriate business entity to
accept the contributions.

PpP Science Planning

Part of the reason for the delay is that we are still deciding what is
the optimal sub-project to begin Prometheus. The latest idea which I believe
will be the final one, is to vitrify brain hippocampal slices which have been
"taught" beforehand and to show that this learned response survives

vitrification. This would require us to find a CPA mixture which is effective in
producing this result. The successful CPA would be available to the cryonics
community for use in suspensions if desired. However, it would need additional
testing (not by us) to prove that it was superior to currently used CPAs for
the body/brain as a whole. In any case, this proven result should give a large
boost to the credibility of the cryonics idea.

Here is a current list of those who are funding the PpP:

Research Institute $100,000
John Bull 1,000
Joe Hovey 1,000
Peter Voss 1,000
Bob Krueger 2,000
Ben Best 1,000
Roy Yowell 5,000
Thomas Donaldson 1,000
Ken Greenwood 2,000
Forrest Bishop 2,000
Brook Norton 1,000
Mike Perry 1,000
Andre Robatino 1,000
Ken Stone 1,000
Mark Mugler 1,000
                       --------
Total PpP Funding $121,000

By their support of the PpP, all those named above have
shown their profound desire to immediately begin the task to
*PROVE* THAT DEATH CAN BE DEFEATED.
