This sounds a bit like the book "If We Can Keep A Severed Head Alive"
written in 1987 by "Chet Fleming". The book appears to have been written as
a sort of poke at the excesses of surgery, and the author took out a
U. S. patent on the process with a view to controlling its use should
someone else develop it.

Flemming proposed a unit upon which the head would reside rather than a
transplant, but if there is no neural connection the difference between
that and transplantation is slight in practise.

I have a few copies of this book left if anyone in the UK or Europe wants
one, and could find the address of the US publisher if copies are wanted
there.
