X-Message-Number: 8988 Date: Sun, 11 Jan 98 19:58:10 From: Mike Perry <> Subject: Bedford Day, Guinness Happy Bedford Day to all. James H. Bedford was frozen Jan. 12, 1967, the first human freezing under controlled conditions. Bedford is in the 1998 Guinness Book of Records, on p. 62 of the hardcover edition. There it says, in part: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Oldest cryonically preserved body After his death on Jan. 12, 1967, Dr. James H. Bedford was placed in a cryocapsule or "dewar" filled with liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196°C (-320°F). Bedford's dewar has been replaced twice, but his body temperature has never been allowed to rise above freezing. The goal of cryonics is to preserve bodies until future technological advances permit them to be "resuscitated" and cured of illnesses that are incurable today. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Mike Perry Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=8988
