Subject: Oregon update

From the PORTLAND OREGONIAN (March 27/98)

In Washington, D.C., a spokesman for Attorney General
Janet Reno said the Justice Department, which includes the U.S.
Drug Enforcement Administration and the FBI, does not plan to
     investigate the Oregon suicides.

However, Reno, who held a weekly news briefing Thursday, said the
Justice Department is still considering an internal review to
determine whether doctors who prescribe lethal doses violate
     medical practices.

Thomas Constantine, head of the DEA, last fall wrote that the act
would prohibit lethal prescriptions. But Reno declined to say
whether a crime had been committed in the two disclosed assisted
     suicides in the Portland area.
