In attempting to refute the contention that a human-capability
machine might be built, and might tend to "obsolete" humanity or some
portion of it, Thomas Donaldson makes the assertion that "no one would
ever want . . ." to do such a thing.
Arguments of the form "No one would ever want to do X" are
simply not admissible in reasoned discourse. Even to *think* that one
knows what *no one* would ever want is as shortsighted as thinking
that one knows what *everyone* would want.
If cryonicists persist in ignoring the frightening scenarios
because "our descendants could never do that to us," we deserve
whatever happens to us. It is up to us to identify these scenarios
in advance and - if necessary - plan for them. Handwaving won't
make them go away.
