 To Thomas Donaldson

Dr. Merkle gave good reasons for thinking that Nanotechnology would be able
to extract enough information from a skillfully frozen brain to preserve
memory and identity. If you had said that his reasoning was provocative but
fell short of a proof I would not have had the slightest objection nor I am
sure would Dr. Merkle himself. You went far beyond that however, you said his
ideas were harmful to Cryonics besides being "meaningless" "fallacious" and
most incredible of all "irrelevant".

You then take Dr. Merkle to task for not giving even one reason for thinking
that freezing would not result in the total destruction of memory and
identity. This remark really mystifies me, the bulk of Dr. Merkle's rather
long post dealt with exactly that issue and makes me wonder if you even
read it.

Intelligent criticism is extremely valuable, it's vital for the advancement
not just of Cryonics but all of Science, the same can not be said of heckling
however which is rude, not well thought out, and just plain worthless.
