Hartwell Captures Men's Individual Pursuit Title at U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track Cycling

FRISCO, Texas (April 26, 2000) - Erin Hartwell (Indianapolis) took another step towards his conversion from sprint cyclist to endurance cyclists when he captured the men's 4,000-meter individual pursuit Wednesday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track Cycling at The Superdrome in Frisco, Texas.

No cyclists have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Track Cycling team through their performances during the first two days of competition. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for track Cycling conclude on Saturday.

Hartwell, who is the only U.S. cyclist to win medals in consecutive Olympic Games, won the event with a time of four minutes 38.002 seconds to defeat Mike Tillman (Santa Monica, Calif.), who posted the fastest time during the morning qualifying round. Adham Sbeih (Granite Bay, Calif.) finished in third place in just his fourth career individual pursuit race. He posted the fastest overall time in the individual pursuit, but recorded that time in the third-place race.

Meanwhile, the trio of Johnny Barios (Redlands, Calif.), Marcelo Arrue (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Sky Christopherson (Tucson, Ariz.) won the men's Olympic Sprint, one of four new events on the 2000 Olympic schedule. The team posted a winning time of 47.002 to defeat a team comprised of Marty Nothstein (Trexlertown, Pa.), Jonas Carney (Redwood City, Calif.) and Chris Springer (Los Gatos, Calif.). Last July, Barios, Nothstein and Arrue won the gold medal in the Olympic Sprint at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada. On Tuesday night, Christopherson captured the title in the kilometer time trial.

In the women's sprint qualifying, Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash.) registered the fastest time in the 200-meter time trial. The top 12 U.S. sprinters advance to Thursday's first round. Reed, who won the national match sprint, title in 1998, recorded a time of 11.609. Chris Witty (Park City, Utah) registered the third-fastest qualifying time during the qualifying round, but withdrew to concentrate on the 500-meter time trial. Witty, who won a pair of medals at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, placed fourth in the 500-meter time trial at the 1998 World Track Cycling Championships in Bordeaux, France.

Among the finals slated for Thursday is the women's match sprint and men's points race. In addition, the men's qualifying round for the sprint will also be staged.
