Past Olympians Dot 13-Member USA Cycling Roster Competing At World Cup in South America
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 25, 2000) --- USA Cycling will send 13 cyclists to the second of five stops on the World Track Cup schedule in Mexico City on May 26-28. Last week, USA Cycling sent six cyclists to Moscow, Russia for the 2000 World Cup debut.
Among the sprinters who are slated to compete are 1996 Olympic silver medalist Marty Nothstein (Trexlertown, Pa.), the winner of 19 national titles and seven world championship medals. A three-time world champion, Nothstein will race in two events - Keirin and match sprint. Joining Nothstein in the sprint events are Marcelo Arrue (Woodland Hills, Calif.), who won a gold (Olympic Sprint) and silver (match sprint) medal at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada. In addition, Sky Christopherson (San Diego) and Johnny Bairos (Redlands, Calif.) round out the sprint field. The Olympic Sprint squad will consist of Bairos, Arrue and Christopherson, who defeated '99 Pan Am games gold medallist Julio Herrera of Cuba to win the kilometer time trial at the Copa Cuba Invitational earlier this month in Havana.
The trio of women track sprinters is Tanya Lindenmuth (Trexlertown, Pa.), Tammy Thomas (Yazoo City, Miss.) and Becky Quinn (Quakertown, Pa.). Lindenmuth won the match sprint at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and is the reigning national champion in the 500m time trial and match sprint. Thomas placed first in the 500m time trial at the trials, while Quinn is coming off a pair of top-three finishes at the Copa Cuba.
Two-time Olympic medal winner Erin Hartwell (Indianapolis) headline the endurance track cyclists. He is making the switch from sprint to endurance track cycling, and will compete in the team pursuit and individual pursuit. Others joining Hartwell in the endurance events are Derek Bouchard-Hall (Palo Alto, Calif.), Dylan Casey (Mountain View, Calif.), Tommy Mulkey (Winterville, Ga.) and Mike Tillman (Santa Monica, Calif.). Bouchard-Hall is coming off a second-place finish at the U.S. Olympic Team trials for Road Cycling last week in Jackson, Miss. Casey placed fifth at the same event, and is a past national champion in the individual pursuit.
Erin Veenstra-Mirabella (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will compete in the individual pursuit and points race. She earned gold medals in both events at the 1999 Pan American Games, and garnered sixth place at the '99 World Championships in the points race.
Olympic coaches Des Dickie (sprint) and Craig Griffin (endurance) accompanied the team to Cali, Colombia.
The third World Cup will be held June 16-18 in Mexico City. |
