USA CYCLING ANNOUNCES 2000 WORLD CYCLO-CROSS CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD
USA CYCLING ANNOUNCES 2000 WORLD CYCLO-CROSS CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 16, 1999) - 1999 world bronze medalist Tim Johnson (Middleton, Mass.) and 1996 Olympic road cyclist Alison Dunlap (Colorado Springs, Colo.) headline USA Cycling's 2000 World Cyclo-Cross Championship squad, it was announced Thursday. The event will be held Jan. 29-30, in St. Michielsgestel, The Netherlands.
Last January in Poprad, Slovakia, Johnson became the first U.S. athlete to win a medal in the 50-year history of the World Cyclo-Cross Championships. This season, he has competed primarily in Europe on the World Cup circuit, including a 15th place finish at the season opener. Johnson also captured the Saturn/U.S. Cycling Federation (USCF) National Cyclo-Cross under-23 championship last weekend in San Francisco, his second consecutive national title.
Joining Johnson on the men's elite squad are 1999 national champion Marc Gullickson (Boulder, Colo.), 1999 SuperCup champion Bart Bowen (Albuquerque, N.M.), Damon Kluck (Boulder, Colo.) and Alex Candelario (Boulder, Colo.). Gullickson has competed at the past two world championships, including a 29th-place finish in 1998. This marks Bowen's first world championship outing in cyclo-cross after competing at the 1993 and 1995 world road cycling championships. Kluck competed at the 1997 worlds (47th, espoir), while Candelario, the two-time national collegiate champion, is making his debut at the worlds.
The SuperCup is a national cyclo-cross competition that consists of seven races in 1999, and resembles the American version of the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Dunlap will compete in the inaugural Women's World Cyclo-Cross Championship in 2000. She is the three-time defending national women's cyclo-cross champion, and is ranked second in the world in mountain biking (cross-country). Ann Grande (Seattle) won the SuperCup overall point standings with five victories in seven races to earn an automatic spot. Other members of the USA Cycling women's world squad are Shari Kain (San Jose, Calif.), Carmen Richardson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Ruthie Matthes (Durango, Colo.). Kain, Richardson and Matthes finished third, fifth and sixth, respectively at the national championship.
Justin Thompson (Avondale, Pa.) leads the junior squad. He won the junior division of the SuperCup series, and finished runner-up at last week's national championship. Other juniors on the squad include '99 world cham pionship team member Walker Ferguson (Norwood, Colo.), Toby Swanson (Puyallup, Wash.), Alan Obye (Mendon, Vt.) and Josh Anthony (Beverly, Mass.). Ferguson placed 28th at last year's world championships. Swanson and Obye finished third and fourth, respectively at the national championships, while Anthony and Ferguson were sixth and 10th.
Reigning world and two-time national junior champion Matt Kelly (Colorado
Springs, Colo.) will not compete at the 2000 World Cyclo-Cross Championships.
The under-23 (espoir) team is comprised of the twin brothers of Andy and Benjamin Jacques-Mayne (Berkeley, Calif.), along with Jed Sheckler (Olympia, Wash.), Justin Spinelli (Nashua, N.H.) and Jackson Stewart (Los Gatos, Calif.). Spinelli is the only espoir rider with previous world championship experience (1998 - road).
The criteria for team selection were based on the national championship, SuperCup standings and World Cup standings. A complete roster follows this release.
